چکیده

We present the design of an ATM-based interconnect that serves as a high speed packet-switched equivalent of an I/O bus in a workstation/server. By effectively “extending” an external ATM network into the desk-area, the interconnect also functions as a high performance host-network interface. The prototype interconnect, which we are building as part of an ARPA sponsored gigabit local ATM testbed, boasts an aggregate sustained bidirectional data rate in excess of a gigabit per second. The interconnect design, which is targeted specifically for multimedia workstations/servers, employs a single custom VLSI chip called the ATM Port Interconnect Controller (APIC); by daisy-chaining a number of these chips, and connecting each to an I/O device, we can support the uninterrupted flow of continuous media data from device to device, as well as from a device to the network and vice-versa.

Progress in Optical Interconnects for Data Communication — Bringing Light to the Board, Backplane, and Intra-Boxes

The off-chip electrical interconnects for high speed and high I/O processors have become increasingly complex and costly. Data transfer rates exceeding gigabits per second are common in high performance computer systems. A cost-effective wide-band interconnect between chips, modules, boards, backplane, frames and cabinets has become increasingly critical in the system design. This paper reviews...

Ultra-High-Speed CMOS Interface Technology

Enhancing the performance of the broadband Internet and the performance of computer and storage systems requires high-bandwidth networks to interconnect these systems. Fujitsu has already marketed high-speed network interface products such as the 10 G Ethernet and has recently developed a CMOS interface that accommodates high-speed data transfer at 6.4 Gb/s per signal line to increase network b...

Design Advances in PCB/Backplane Interconnects for the Propagation of High Speed Gb/s Digital Signals

Over the past five years tremendous advances have been made in the design of copper-based transmission line interconnects capable of propagating high-speed broadband digital signals over long lengths of printed circuit boards (PCBs) and backplanes. Data rates of 5 Gb/s transmitted over a single differential pair routed across more than one meter of PCB and backplane interconnect using low-cost ...
